Water Damage Categories and Classes: What Homeowners Should Know

Water on the floor is only part of the problem. Moisture can soak into walls, cabinets, insulation, and flooring. The cleanup plan depends on contamination, affected materials, and measured moisture conditions.

Category describes contamination

Category 1 starts from a sanitary source, such as a broken potable-water supply line. Category 2 contains significant contamination. Category 3 is grossly contaminated; sewage and many outdoor flooding events require special precautions. Clear-looking water is not proof that it is sanitary.

A professional evaluates the source and what the water contacted. Contamination can worsen with conditions and time, but there is no universal 24–48-hour rule that automatically changes the category.

Class describes the drying load

Water-damage class describes the estimated evaporation load used in planning humidity control. It is not a health-risk rating or a guaranteed drying timeline. Classes 1–3 reflect increasing amounts of affected absorbent materials; Class 4 concerns moisture held in materials that may require specialized drying.

What to do after a leak

Stay clear of electrical hazards and contaminated water. Stop the source if you can do so safely, and arrange for the appropriate plumber, roofer, or other contractor to repair it. Document visible damage and contact a restoration professional promptly.

Wilson’s Remediation evaluates affected areas, extracts water, performs appropriate cleanup, and sets up controlled drying. Moisture readings help determine progress; a floor that feels dry does not establish that hidden materials are dry.

If mold contamination is discovered, the scope and methods may change. Independent licensed mold assessors provide assessment, protocols, and clearance. Wilson’s Remediation performs remediation under Florida license MRSR3078.
